My car is in the shop and BMW is agreeing to pay 50% of the cost for the Turanza's as well. I thought BMW views their owners as a breed that expects more than the average with a level of intelligence as well. They are willing to pay 50% for an issue that will occur again in 10-20k? This makes no sense. If enough owners speak out, I'm sure in the litigious society we live a suit of some sort will arise.

Here's my story: I bought an 07 335xi with 18" wheels. The wheels were alright but needed all season run flat tires which are not available in 18". So I bought BMW style 159 17' rims and tires (used on ebay from anopther BMW owner) and when I put on the 17" rft they felt hard as a rock. No joke it was the worst driving experience ever. Made me want my 18's again. Then I realized the 17"s were possibly defective after reading online message boards. I went to the dealer and they agreed that my tires were e42's and had been recalled. They agreed to replace all four tires. WOW what a difference the new run flat tires on 17" wheels feel like slippers. Soft and sticky. I love them, 100% better than previous bmw rft. Also stayed with bridgestones.

I have a 2007 328XI with Sport Package. Original tires were Bridgestone Potenza. After a few months they became noisy and were replaced at no charge (except for some silly materials).
Next up were Pirelli Eufori@. After a few months those too became noisy. They will be replaced in the spring, again at no charge.
(Incidentally, my winter tires, Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22 are also very noisy!)
According to my dealer, the only other option is Continental. The problem is that I have the sport package (225 width front and 255 width rear) and Continental doesn't yet make the run-flat in 255 width.
I am SERIOUSLY considering getting rid of these run-flat tires and going with a good quality 'normal' tire. My experience is that run-flats are complete and utter garbage.
At this point I don't care about the spare tire. I'll let my roadside assistance take care of that if I ever have an issue.

Its a 328xi 2007 from BMW of Mississauga in Ontario Canada. Noise started at 10,000kms and progressively got worse until 17000 km when it sounded like my front end bearings were gone.
BMW dealer said oh you are over 16k we will only pay for 2 tires and your cost will be $653. Their customer service was awful and totally avoided any responsibility nor did they return my calls to log of the incident report that they were recommending I change the tires. Nothing in writing and they want to install the same crap so I can enjoy the noise again in a few months. Surprise I took the shuttle home and 2 more 3 series customers livid that they were being forced to pay for tires and being blamed for not checking tire pressures every 2 weeks?? all including me have gone out and spent $700 on 4 good Michelin tires and bought 2 cans puncture repair in a bottle. I'm in Canada and I can tell you that I called around and I only found I tire dealer who deals in Run flats so if I breakdown someplace in Canada, there is no way I am going to make the 50 miles to a dealer so that safety line a BS reason. I have also discovered that most of these delaers will not repair a punctured run flat as they claim it may compromise safety. At least now I can have CAA tow me to the nearest tire place who will definitely repair a Michelin or replace it at $150. Now that I can handle
Definitley I will never buy a BMW again for this reason. There are plenty of good alternatives out there now from Lexus, Infinity and even the new Merc.

I took the dealer the service bulletin about replacing the tires (South Bay BMW in Torrance CA) and they argued & said the bulletin didn't apply to out car, when the bulletin specifically said it did!!! This spring, I put the Potenza RE50's back on and noticed they are much louder than the winter tires. ALL of the outer edges show a cupping / sawtooth wear pattern. There is still at least 70% tread left, and the car has received all scheduled maintenance, including tire rotations. I know there is no chance of any compensation, but this kind of wear seems strange...Maybe it's Audi A4 time......judging by the amount of comments, this seems to be a real issue that BMW is turning a blind eye to.

325i is about 2.5 years old. Started having the tire noise around 15k miles. Didn't pay much attention to it at first but then took it to the dealer who told me that I need new tires because of uneven wear. I didn't want to put down $900 at that point so continued to live with the noise. I finally replaced them this week with continental RFT's and the noise is gone, car handles better. Wow what a change. I've written to BMW a couple of times about this.
I think they assume that I have an IQ <100 with the same corporate blah blah they put in their reply. I think and hope this will be decided in court similar to the Toyota case where the court instructed that all RFT's be covered till 36k miles.
Till then BMW's official stance is that they dont manufacture the tire and are not responsible(even though they have a TSB to replace tires till 12k). I will not buy another BMW, if enough of us do this they will listen. Write to BMW and let them know how you feel.

I have a BMW 2007 328XI. It was delivered in February 2007 and I have 10400 miles on it. Took it for the second time to have the tires rotated and balanced and found out that all 4 tires are cupping. The noise from these tires is getting louder and louder. Taking it in to the dealership next Wednesday but after speaking with them they accused me of not maintaining proper tire pressure. It is caused from the car not being properly aligned from the factory. We buy BMW's because of the zero dollar maintence plan and not having to service it for 15,000 miles but boy is this going to cost. An with no spare, do you switch to different tires that are not runflat? I think Bridgestone and BMW need to step up to the plate and pay for new tires on these cars. After all, if they are not going to provide a spare, they need to provide tires that don't wear out after 10,000 miles or replace them for free. We pay a lot of money for these cars, the very least they can do is put a tire on the car that is going to perfrom and last more than 10,000 miles. My brother in law has a Lexus with run flats, has had nothing but trouble with noise and Lexus has replaced them with no charge. Apparently, Lexus covers and stands behind their tires. Where is BMW? Apparently no where near Lexus in customer service.

I only have 38,000 km (20,000 miles) I also have a 2004 320i, but there is no road noise or tire noise at all.

I have the same problem with my 2007 X5. The oscillating noise is coming from the rear above 45mph and it's getting louder. Went to the dealer and they will replace the tires with $5.00 discount. What an insult! They think BMW is the best car in the world. It's a good car but do not expect a good service. I'll never buy an another BMW.

I too have a 328I and with 7000 miles the tires sound like a truck. I went to Goodyear and they recommended that I go to the BMW dealer and complain. Goodyear said the only remedy is to replace the tires. Glad I found your blog - I am taking this with me to BMW.

I have a 2006 BMW 325i and these RFT Turanza are crap, car sounds like a tank slapping the road and have very little tread at 30k miles. They also hydroplane badly. Really hate the car right now, will try the Conti pro SSR for now and see what happens, BMW has hurt their image with this.

(11/24) I agree. This is not a tire problem. This is a mechanical problem. I have 32K on my 323i and highway driving is so loud I have to put my music on full blast to drown the noise out. I am afraid I am done with BMW after this lease expires.

I have the same problem. I have a 2006 325 and the tires have a high pitch sound. Honestly, it's driving me crazy. i went back to the dealer and all they told me was that the tires were cupping and they said next time to buy a different brand of tire. I am now at 27,000mi so I doubt they will change them for free. But now I'm worried that new tires will do the same thing. I'm not convinced that it is only due to the tire wear. My tires actually still look pretty good.

I have a 2007 BMW 328i 4 door sedan. I am approaching 25K miles and my car sounds horrible when I am slowing down to a stop. I brought the car to the dealer and they said I need 4 new tires. It almost sounds like I need a brake job or brake pads. Granted I am due for 30K mile service soon, but I can't imagine having to pay for 4 new tires; run flats no less!
Does it matter if I have the tires replaced at the BMW dealership where I got the car or can I just take it to any tire shop and have them replace the tires for much less the cost?
I called the BMW dealer parts manager and he said he advises me to have the tires changed at the BMW dealership since there have been a few nightmare stories about regular tire shops not knowning how to work with the run flats and doing more damage than good to the wheels themselves.
HELP!

I have a 323 and a 745 and both get road noise after some time even on regular tires... So when the noise comes, i just get a new set of regular ones.. I do know that alignment is very importand on these cars. And not anyone can do it.. I have done it at a so called european car center and my wheels were destroyed so i buy regular tires but usually do the alignment at bmw which is more than the others, or at a place that i know can do bmws and guarantees their work!.. Sorry for the troubles everyone but the more people talk..the more they faster they will listen!

I have a BMW 750i 2006. The original tires, Bridgestone runflats, were replaced at 21,000 after cupping badly and generating huge noise. I replaced with Michelin standard tires, and at 12,000 miles, they are beginning to make a lot of noise, especially at higher speeds. BMW paid for half of the Michelins. Dealer is telling me to turn up the radio. Great advice for a $75,000 car! I believe there is something wrong with BMW design causing this widespread tire problem. Frustrated

As I was reading this thread, I noticed that many folks complained about Turanza and shared their feedback that Continentals may be better....well, I have 17" Continental Conti Pros and they're noisy as hell...the noise has gotten much worse in the last 9-10K miles...however, I don't know if there's a better alternative other than switching to regular tires and hoping for the best (since there's no room for the spare in my 330i)

So to deal with this tire noise problem, I bought 2 new Michelin standard tires, placed them at the front.
To save some money, I kept other RFT, took them off the rim and revered the direction so it will start wearing off the other side of the tire. Noise went away but is it safe? Don't know.

DON'T get Continental Conti Pros RFTs as a replacement...you'll regret it..I'm not sure if they're better than Bridgestone RFTs, but the noise is terrible and is steadily getyting worse although the tires still look great with plenty of thread left

I own a 2007 328i with Pirelli run flats. The first set started to rumble at 15K miles and the dealer replaced them on a pro rata basis. The replacement set, also Pirelli run flats, started to rumble before 10K miles and the dealer refused to do anything. I reminded them that I had purchased 2 other cars from them and told them that no one I knew would ever buy a car from them again if they refused to address the problem. The next day I received a call back from the service manager with a change of heart and they agreed to replace the tires again at no cost. (Actually I had told them that I would pay for the miles I had driven on them but they replaced them at no charge.) On the first set, they told me that it was a 'bad batch' and not a bad tire model from Pirelli. On the 3rd set, I told them 'no more Pirelli's' so the 3rd set are Continentals. Not as firm or sticky, but they ride fine and after 12K miles I don't hear any noise.
A friend of mine has a 2003 3 series with Continentals and his tires are making a lot of noise.

I purchased new a 2006 BMW 325XI that has approx 20K miles. I only have 10k miles on the stock Run Flat tires due to a spare set that I run in the summer months. Just last week the car began making a horrible noise/SHAKE in the rear end and has chewed the inside section of the rear tires a quarter of the way in. I was told by BMW of Murray that the combination of poor tires and a Negative camber in the rear suspension will create this problem and there is nothing BMW will do to fix this problem. If I wanted problems like this in 20k miles I would've bought an Audi, Lexus, etc. Little did I know, that I'd experience problems like this with a BMW. I will never purchase another BMW nor will I ever do business with BMW OF MURRAY in SALT LAKE CITY again!

Why can they recall the tire or BmW to use regular tire

I have a 2003 Z4 with Yokohamas and have the same tire noise as is described by others below. I agree - it sounds like a truck going down the road and I even had one guy pull up next to me at a stop light and mention that my tires were making a loud noise. Seems like I'm even annoying other drivers with my tires now. I tried the cross-fronts, rears forward that another recommended and it seemed to help a little but the noise is still there. I guess 10,000 miles between rotations is too much and ruins the tires for good.

completely agree now. Gave the RFT a chance thinking might be tire pressure, wheel balanceing, alignment. The tires are noisy. Changed them and now the ride is as subtle as it can be. BMW stated they did not stand behind the tires or warrantee them. If so, why the F#@@ do they put them on these cars?

I have an 06 325i and I am on my 4th set of tires. My runflats went at 17,000 km, got a cheap set of tires and replaced them immediately and I am on my 2nd set of Proxes T1R's. The noise is not as bad as the funflats but they are going after only 2 short summers of use. Has to be a car problem more than a tire problem. Cupping is the issue on all tires I have had on. Spent a fortune on balancing and checking alignment -- nothing wrong. Has to be the canter or something like that.

I have a 2007 328ix with those terrible run flat tires. I was experiencing tire noise at around 12,000 miles. Even the service manager at the dealership mentioned it to me. It's my second car with those tires and I can't hate them anymore than I do. No only are they loud, they wear like crap. The hard sidewall makes it impossible to take a corner with any speed at all. If you hit a bump in even a slight corner, the car will skip. I hate these freakin things.
